2010 Nissan Altima – Uncle Frank’s September Car Of The Month

The 2010 Nissan Altima has been chosen the September Car of the Month.

The midsize family car category is very crowded with many brands aspiring to be one of the favorites with Middle America. Nissan’s Altima is once again one of Uncle Frank’s favorite mid-sized family cars this year and with good reasons too.

The current version of the Nissan Altima debuted in 2007 and, quite frankly, was getting a little long in tooth.  This year, Nissan gave the Altima a good dose of rejuvenation and refreshing which will help keep it near the top of Uncle Frank’s “Best Of” list.

So what exactly has Nissan changed for 2010? The styling updates are so subtle that you might not notice them. The grille, hood, and front bumper have all been reshaped. The Altima also gets upgraded fabrics and a new gauge cluster on the inside.

Other Cars to Consider

Only a handful of rivals — the Ford Fusion, Mazda6 and Chevy Malibu, for instance – are as good as the Altima. The Mazda6, has a less bland interior and is more fun to drive.  The Chevy Malibu also has a better interior than the Altima and the Honda Accord is still more comfortable to drive – especially long distances. A newcomer that also deserves a mention is the sharp Suzuki Kizashi. It’s now one of the top performers in the midsize car class and it comes fairly well-equipped for under $22,000.

But if you’re looking for a great all-rounder, Uncle Frank would say the Altima is your best choice with the Mazda being a close second. It’s a fantastic car with good looks and a good ride with a huge list of options (some that are extremely pricey) that should satisfy even the pickiest buyer.

Pros

Good power from four-cylinder and V6 engines
Stylish interior with comfortable cockpit
Sleek and sporty exterior
Solid fuel efficiency
Handles responsively
Simple but comfortable interior

Cons

Backseat is cramped due to a lack of head and leg room
Complicated and expensive option packages
Keyless ignition system is mandatory
Hybrid powertrain uneasy in highway cruising
